June Birthstones
(404 Words)
June is a month with three birthstones. According to the American Gem Society, pearl, alexandrite and moonstone are all considered to be birthstones of this month. Each is a beautiful stone in its own way and can be worn in jewelry to celebrate the month of your or your child’s birth.
Pearl
Pearl is the most commonly worn of the three gemstones. It has been worn for many centuries, and the 1500s were considered the pearl age. It was even worn back in the time of the Roman empire.
Pearls do not come from the ground as most gems do, but instead come from oysters, living animals in the sea. Also unlike other stones, they come out completely ready to wear. They do not need to be treated.
In the past, pearls were extremely rare, but they have become much more common since the 1920s when the process of culturing pearls started. They can be seen in many different types of jewelry. A pearl necklace is one of the most classic and iconic pieces of jewelry a woman can own.
Alexandrite
Alexandrite has been used for a far shorter a time than pearls. People first located it in Russia in 1831. The stone is typically green, but under incandescent light it looks red and purple. People prize it for this color changing ability. Because it is rare, it is not unusual to see a created version of the stone sold in jewelry.
Moonstone
Moonstone was named by Pliny, a historian who thought that the stone changed appearance based on the moon’s phases. This unusual stone will often show a star or cat’s eye in it. Those in India hold it sacred and think of it as a sign of good fortune.
Moonstone is from the mineral family feldspar. It can be found in both metamorphic rocks and igneous rocks. It also comes in different colors, including blue, green, peach and champagne. The play of light on its surface is referred to as adularescence. The most common sources of moonstone include Sri Lanka, Australia and India. It can also be found in the United Stated, Madagascar and Mayanmar. It can be seen in different types of jewelry.
Women who are born in June or want to celebrate a child who was will have several choices of birthstones from which to choose. Pearl, alexandrite and moonstone are each attractive stones that make beautiful pieces of jewelry.
