Best Practices for Filling out an Employment Application
Your employment application may be extremely important in helping to secure you a job. There are some best practices that can help you get the result you want – an interview. Consider the following tips.
Type if possible, write legibly if not
Typing your application may make it seem more professional and you will not need to worry about whether they can read your writing or not. If you can fill out the application at home or via the computer, make sure to do this. If you must write it such as if they ask for the application before a scheduled interview, then pretend that you are taking a handwriting test. Make sure that they can read every single letter.
Fill it with points that make you stand out
You want your application to shine above the others. Think about the job and what they are looking for. For instance, if you are looking for a position as a salesperson and you have had some great sales in the past, then find a place to include this such as in the description of a previous job. You want to show them what you can do.
Do not make it overwhelming
More is not always better. When you are filling out your job experience, for instance, it is not usually necessary to put down every job. Put down the most recent ones, especially highlighting any that are pertinent to the potential position. Do not overfill the space and then start writing in the margins, on the back and on attached papers unless instructed to do so – they do not want a book from you. Also think about the educational points you put down. If you have a masters and a doctorate degree, then putting down that you were in the drama club in high school might only seem childish.
Read through it when you are finished
It is amazing how many people send off employment applications without a once-through. Even the smartest of people make typos, and you want to make sure that it reads well. Go over it as many times as necessary to ensure this.
Make sure that it is fully filled out
Do not hand in an employment application with blanks. Come prepared with all of the information you need such as the dates, phone numbers and addresses of past employers. You want it to be complete and not look incompetent because you cannot even remember your own personal information.
Your employment application can stand out or it can relegate you to the rejection pile. Consider the above best practices in order to submit a great employment application.
