The effects of the massive amount of trash that Americans throw out every day is staggering. In many cases, items that are thrown out could actually be of use to someone else. Freecycling is the act of giving away these items that would otherwise go to waste.
There are many different ways that one can Freecycle. You could do it locally and on your own by giving items that you do not need to others. You may give it to a friend, or you may give it to a charity organization that takes donations. Another popular way is to join a Freecycling organization.
The Freecycle Network is a Freecycling network with almost a billon members in over 5000 groups, according to its website. It is a nonprofit organization that boasts members across the world. People sign up, and you can search for local groups. Individuals and non-profit organizations can post or browse through forums to discuss items that they want or have to give away. Its tagline is “Changing the world one gift at a time.”
When people join a Freecycling group such as the Freecycle Network they can connect with others. They can make arrangements with others to give away the items that they do not need. In many of these groups you can search for people who are local to you. This can make it convenient to either mail your item or meet up somewhere where you can transfer the item.
In some cases people might exchange items so that everyone gets a benefit from it. You can peruse the forum for specific items that you want or just look to see what is available near you. There are many different Freecycling organizations, and you can look online to see the groups near you. Of course be on the lookout for scams.
Freecycling benefits everyone. The person getting it has a benefit because he or she gets something useful without needing to pay for it. The person giving it away gets a benefit because he or she will feel the pleasure from doing something altruistic and will be happy that something he or she doesn’t need is getting use. Of course everyone will reap the benefits of less waste in landfills and less resulting pollution.
Whether you are giving your unwanted items to someone you know or whether you are participating in a Freecycling organization, you will see the benefits from this positive trend.
