Bulletin Board Ideas that Encourages Reading
Encouraging children to read is an important element of school. One way to do so is to make use of a bulletin board. Consider the following ideas for crafting such a board.
Place in the beginning of some very interesting books
In the story of Arabian Nights, the heroine teased the hero by telling only the first part of a story and leaving the end until later. You can employ this same strategy in encouraging children to read with a bulletin board. You can place up the beginning of one or more books. You can find books that have particularly exciting beginnings – those that would leave a student thirsting for more. Hopefully when they read the beginning of the books, they will be encouraged to read the rest of the books themselves. Alternatively you can put up some books in their entirety.
Put up a bulletin board that looks like one giant book
Why not turn the entire bulletin board into a novel? You can even give it “pages” that can flip from one side to the next made of poster board or a similar type of material. On the pages of the books you can have information about different age appropriate books.
Put in illustrations from the different books
Many young children are very interested in the pictures. This may draw them in more than words. You can make reproductions of these pictures and place them on the bulletin board. If they look at them then hopefully they will get interested in the story and want to learn about it.
Focus on the characters from stories in your bulletin board
Your bulletin board can be about the fictional characters. For instance, you should have a picture of the character as well as a profile. You can post up things that “belong” to the character such as a wallet with an ID. You can put up lists like the characters likes, dislikes, etc. The children may start to relate to the character and want to read about his or her adventures.
Focus on the authors
The children may like to read someone’s books if they learn about the authors. You can talk about what the authors were like, perhaps even focusing on them as children to help the student relate to them better.
A bulletin board is a great way to get children interested in reading. Consider the above ideas to help foster this learning in students.
