Do you remember being up until the wee hours of the night, studying for that test that you put off until the very last moment? This is obviously not what we want to teach our teens. So how do we teach them to have good study habits? Consider the following methods.
Show by example
You want your teens to watch how you do things and follow by example. Obviously most adults are no longer studying, but you can show them these lessons in other ways. For instance, a lot of teens have the bad study habit of procrastinating until the Wast minute. You can try to avoid this characteristic yourself. when you have something to do, especially if it is important, give yourself plenty of time to do it right without rushing. Show that it is better to space things out over time or to do them early so that they get done right and do not have to constantly worry about them. Hopefully they will apply this lesson to studying. Also, you want to teach them about being able to focus on one thing. If you have wok that you bring home from your job, for instance, you can show them how you just focus on that and are not taking breaks every two minutes and watching television at the same time.
Talk to them about good study habits
You can talk to your kids about the best ways to study. You can even share some stories from when you were a child, if you think they would be receptive. You can talk about focusing and about trying not to let your mind wander.
Set specific times for your teen to study
If your child just does not have the skills to make good use of study time (or to make time in general) then help him or her do it. Tell them that they must do their studying before they do other activities such as going out with friends, watching television, playing video games, etc. Make sure that they do not have the television on or are surfing the Internet while they are supposed to be studying. Have them do it in a good amount of time before a test so that they are not waiting until the last minute. Just make these the rules that this is how you are supposed to study and hopefully they will start to do it on their own and you will not have to police it in the future.
You want your teen to have good study habits that they can take with them into college and beyond. Use the above tips to foster this in your teen.
