: Challenges Unique to Childrens Photography

:
(469 Words)
One of the most common customers of photography services are those looking to preserve the memories of their little one’s images forever. They may tote in their angelic looking children into the photography studio, but once the word “Smile” gets uttered, chaos may ensue. There are many challenges unique to children’s photography, including the following.
Many children can’t sit still!
It can be difficult to take pictures if your subject is walking away from the room. Many kids just cannot sit still for even the instant that it takes to take a picture. A small child might not understand and may try to wiggle, crawl or walk away. An older child might actually make an effort, but they still might be moving around.
To make a picture right you may want to pose them an exact way. You may keep instructing them but no matter what they keep moving it back the other way. It can be difficult to get that exact picture you want.
They may not understand your instructions
With very young children, you might not be able to simply say, “Okay stand like this and smile.” They may have no idea of what you are saying. It can be hard to direct them on what to do if they cannot yet understand.
They may be fussy
If you are photographing adults, chances are they are not going to start to cry because they want a snack. Many children get very fussy while taking pictures. They may throw a temper tantrum. Most parents do not want a bunch of pictures of crying babies, and they may be stuck in this pattern for the entire time.
They may fall asleep
Some young children may get very tired and actually fall asleep. Once a child falls asleep it can be quite the challenge to wake them up and near impossible to do so while keeping them in a good mood.
They may ruin their outfit through an accident
Many young ones spit up. You may have to stop to have their outfit changed or have to work around it if they do not have another outfit. Also, they may have a diaper accident. Even if it does not leak but they “go” the parent may want to stop to change it. Also older children often wait until the last minute to tell their parents that they have to go to the bathroom so you might have to stop right in the middle of a photography session for them to do so.
The problem many photographers face is that they do not have to deal with just one but instead multiple children during a sitting. All of the problems may be magnified. Photographers should be aware of these hazards and try to have patience to get the best possible results.
