: How to Lead by example in the Workplace

You may know that you can teach your children by setting a good example for them, but this technique can also apply in the workplace. It can be difficult for an employee to follow someone if they feel that they are a hypocrite by telling them to do things that they do not do themselves. Consider the following strategies for leading by example in the workplace.
Show that you are on time
If you tell your employees that they must be there every morning at exactly 8:00 a.m. but then saunter in every day at 9:30 with poor reasons such as overslept, was running slow, etc., then your employees might start to get frustrated. They may wonder why they should make the effort to come in on time if you cannot do it. A lot of them might start to show up late but you won’t even realize it because you are not there.
The same may go for when you leave. If they are expected to stay until five but you always duck out early for no good reason, then you are setting a bad example. Again, you are the boss and it may be your right, but you have to understand that your behavior does influence theirs.
Show that you are willing to go the extra mile
Most bosses want their employees to go the extra distance. If there is a huge project that means a lot to the company you may want your workers to stay late to finish it. If, however, you always ask them to stay late but then you never do anything extra, they may resent you. If you show that you are willing to sacrifice your own time for the company, then they might be willing to do so as well.
Show that you work diligently and do not goof off
If the boss is constantly taking coffee breaks, stopping working to surf the Internet, taking personal phone calls and so forth, then the employees might figure that this is okay. Despite what you say, they may feel that if you do it, then they can too. They may try to get away with this behavior whenever they can. If, however, you show that you work very diligently and do not fool around, then they will admire you for that.
It is important to set a good example in the workplace. Your employee’s behavior may be related to it.
