Medications can cost a lot of money, and oftentimes you really have no choice but to pay whatever they ask. Fortunately, there are different things that you can do in order to save money on medications. The following are some strategies to try.
Make sure you are getting the most from your insurance
Make sure that you know what your insurance plan covers to ensure that you are getting your full benefit. Sometimes insurance plans will not initially cover something but you can appeal it on certain grounds. You want to make sure that you make the most out of the plans you have.
Consider additional plans
Certain people may be eligible for certain medication plans, which can save them money. For instance, many Medicare recipients can get additional coverage to save them money. Before signing up for any new plan, make sure that you will truly save money. Sometimes there are discount programs that are not really insurance plans but might give you savings as well.
Price around
Not all places charge the same amount for medications. Part of it will depend on your insurance plan. Some people pay a certain amount of money no matter where they go (i.e. $5 a prescription) and then it might not matter. However, a lot of people pay a percentage. Also, some retailers are now offering some medications at no cost. An example is Publix Supermarkets offering certain antibiotics for free. Even small savings in cost can add up as they are compounded over time.
Look for coupons
Look to save money by finding coupons. You can often find these for both prescription and over the counter medications. For instance, Target will often give you a $10 gift card for a new or transferred prescription. Also, some of the over the counter medications might go on sale in certain stores as well.
Purchase generic or store brand
The store brands of over the counter medications often have the exact same active ingredient but cost a fraction of the price. Many of the major stores such as Target, Walgreens and Publix have their own versions of the popular medications. For prescription medications, you can often find generics that are the same. You will want to check about the particular medicine because occasionally the generics are different such as with certain thyroid medications.
Medications can be very expensive, but you can save money. Consider the above techniques to help you save on these items.
