If your child is not feeling well, the pediatrician should be able to find out what the problem is and decide a logical course of action (with the exception of something unusual that must be sent to a specialist or for further tests and in that case they should be able to direct you where to go). They should be able to prescribe the correct remedies whether it is medicine or some alternative treatment. They should know when not to prescribe medicine. They should know the correct medicines that will have the least side effects. Also, they should send children for the correct tests and not expose them to radiation without reason. Medicine is a complicated field, and you need someone who is intelligent and skilled in order to care for your child.
It can be difficult to ascertain whether your pediatrician has these qualities. If you already use one, you will be able to get an idea if he seems to treat your child well. If you are shopping around for one, then you might want to ask people for recommendations. Especially look towards pediatricians where you have several recommendations for the same person or in which someone was with him or her for a long time. You can also get a recommendation from a different doctor or other professional.
