2236 Words: 414
In today’s troubling economy, many people have lost their positions as a result of layoffs and budget cuts. Unfortunately, it is not always so easy to replace your job, and some facing long-term unemployment have uncertain job prospects in the future. It can be difficult to maneuver in such treacherous waters. The following are some tips for surviving long-term unemployment.
Control your spending
It is very important to control your spending if you do not have money coming in (or a reduced amount such as unemployment wages). You will want to make a careful budget and try to save wherever you can. Truly think about what is a necessity versus what is a luxury. Think of all ways to save money and try to work with all members of the family to do so. Even if you are okay for now, you do not know for certain how long you will be unemployed, and you want to be able to “stay afloat,” so to speak, for as long as possible.
Look to get money coming in from wherever possible
You will want to be sure to be aware and apply for any unemployment benefits for which you might be eligible. This can be significant, and there are deadlines that are important to meet so that you do not miss out on funds. Also, there may be ways you can make money while unemployed. Perhaps there is some extra freelance work you can do. Perhaps there are ways you can invest money if you have extra. Be careful not to do anything too risky, however, because you do not want to be in a worse position.
Stay motivated
It can be easy to get depressed when facing such a situation. Low self-esteem can result, and you want to try to avoid that as much as possible. You are far from alone. Many people are in this situation, and you want to stay emotionally sound by realizing that things are likely to get better. To this end, you might want to continue to look for work. The more you look, the better chance you have of finding a position. It is also likely to make you feel good to see that you are at least trying. You can consider looking in different positions if you do not believe you can get one in your old position.
Surviving long-term unemployment can be stressful, but you can do it. Consider the above tips to help you in this.
