2237 Words: 413
You can barely think beyond the pain in your head. Like the sharp edge of a knife, the pain reverberates through you, and you wonder what you can possibly do in order to make it better. The irony is that you might actually be inadvertently doing things to make it worse. The following are ways that people exacerbate their headaches without realizing it.
You focus on the headache
If you think and think and think about a headache, oftentimes it will get a lot worse. By focusing on it, you can make a self-fulfilling prophecy whereby you think it is going to get very bad and therefore it does. When you are just concentrating on your headache it can get far worse. A lot of times, the best thing to do is to do whatever you can to forget about it. Do whatever you can think of to distract yourself whether it is talking to someone, watching a movie or even exercising. A lot of times we try to avoid every single activity for fear of making our headache worse and we just lay down or sit up, but then we just focus on it. Sometimes if you did the activities then it would actually get better because you would not think about it. Sometimes when you think of a headache it makes you very stressed and you tense up more, which can make it worse. Getting distracted might relax you and relax the muscles that are causing the headache. Of course, for some just doing nothing is the best, so you will just need to see what works best for you.
You don’t eat or drink
Many times the headache is a result of us being hungry or thirsty. Oftentimes when we have a headache, we really do not feel like eating. A bad headache can make you nauseous, which might make you even less likely to want to eat or drink. This can be a mistake, however, because oftentimes that is what will make it better in the first place. We can become so busy in our daily lives that we forget to properly take care of ourselves. Try to remember to eat and stay hydrated to help avoid headaches.
Allow allergies to get out of control
Many times people get sinus headaches, which are the results of allergies. There are different things that you can do to help with allergies, including staying away from allergens and using non-medicinal nasal sprays.
