Just because your child is now an adult does not mean that he does not need assurance that mom and dad love him. Indeed, going to college can be a stressful time for many for although it is filled with exciting new independence, it is quite a challenge for many. There are many different ways that you can express to your child how much you love him. The following are tips for showing your child in college how much you love them.
Tell them that you love them
There is nothing wrong with just saying it. Tell him that you love him. You don’t necessarily have to scream it from the rooftops of his dorm room so that all of his new friends can hear, but you should tell him when you see him and tell him when you talk to him on the phone. You can tell him why you love him if he is having a difficult day or seems sad or anxious. Make sure that he understands that you love him unconditionally. Some parents and children who are college age still have some difficulties lingering from the teenage years. You want him to understand that no matter what had transpired between you or whatever difficulties you faced or are still facing, that you love him.
Call him
Just because he is at college does not mean that he doesn’t want a link to you. If your child is away at college you are going to want to call him. Make sure that he understands that you haven’t forgotten about him, especially if you are doing new things now that he is in college. Don’t call him so much that he is begging you to give him a break, but make sure that you do call him to ask how he is doing and tell him that you love him.
Send him care packages
A nice way to show your love is to send a care package, complete with a “Just because I love you” note. You can send whatever thoughtful things you can think of – some homemade cookies, a book by a favorite author, a CD you think he will like. You can send a card with a heartfelt sentiment that expresses your love.
Just because he is in college does not mean that he isn’t still your baby. Use the above tips to help express your love.
