(415 Words)
You want to save money on Christmas presents, however you do not want to be labeled a Scrooge. Picking out everyone’s present at the dollar store might result in exactly that, however there are many other strategies that can save you money and yet still result in great gifts. Consider the following ideas.
Shop in less expensive places
There are many places (besides the dollar store) that are much cheaper than others. For instance, you can often get great deals on Christmas items at Costco. They put together gift baskets of varying sizes, which cost less than you will find at other stores. They even sometimes will put two or three of the same gift basket together. These can make wonderful gifts and yet cost much less.
Give people something handmade
If you spend the time and effort to make something for your loved ones then they are unlikely to call you a Scrooge even if the gift cost next to nothing. Your time will make it special, perhaps even more so than the most expensive gift. For instance, if you have the skills of a writer, then you can write out a poem or a journal full of quotes or personal letters to your recipient. Think about the skills that you have and what you could possibly make that would cost very little but mean a lot to the person.
Consider photo gifts
Many people love photo gifts and these are often not expensive. You can save money by getting them from an inexpensive source such as Costco or Snapfish. Yet many people love photo gifts (especially parents and grandparents) and they may not think about the fact that you spend $20 on them instead of $100 this year.
Look for sales
There are many great sales this time of year. Although it is an extremely busy shopping day, you might want to very strongly consider going out on Black Friday, the shopping day that is the day after Thanksgiving. You can often get the best sales of the year on this day. Price around at the different stores to find the cheapest deals. Also, if you look online you might be able to save money as well.
Just because you want to save money doesn’t mean you are a Scrooge. It just means that you are one of the countless people who are having trouble in this difficult economy. Use the above techniques to still give great gifts for the 2010 Christmas holiday.
