Common Mistakes to Avoid when Planning a Wedding

(422 Words)
Planning a wedding is a monumental task, with many intricate facets to design. Of course, you want the wedding of your dreams, but common mistakes can compromise your chances. Be wary of the following pitfalls.
Not making (or sticking to) a budget
Weddings typically range from expensive to very expensive. There are many small costs that can add up, and even people who are good with finances will often spend more than they planned. A detailed budget can help to avoid this problem. It should include every single wedding cost imaginable, and you may want to have a line for costs that unexpectedly pop up. You should be aware of how much you are spending at all times. Remember that vendors typically make more money if you spend more, so they may try to convince you to spend beyond your budget. You can have just as much fun at a $10,000 wedding as at a $100,000 wedding – do not overspend just because someone has talked you into it. Make sure that you track your costs and adjust downward if you spend too much in one area.
Assuming with the guest list
When couples write out their guest list, they often overestimate the number that are actually going to show up (although some do the opposite by underestimating). You may see no reason why anyone would miss the wedding but conflicts occur as do last minute cancellations. Do not reserve a hall that has a minimum number of guests that you may or may not meet. Do not waste hundreds or thousands of dollars on party favors that you end up not needing. Send your invitations out in a timely manner to help avoid a problem. If someone fails to respond by the RSVP, then it is okay to send them a quick reminder to find out if they are coming to the party.
Allowing others to make the decisions that should be yours
A wedding is ultimately about two people – the bride and groom. Sadly some couples allow others with aggressive personalities to usurp the decisions that should be theirs. It is difficult when others are providing financial assistance, but you should enjoy your day the most of all. Make sure that you will be happy with your wedding and do not allow someone else to make it about them.
A wedding should be one of the most important days of your life. Be diligent of possible mistakes to avoid problems in the planning stages and actual day of the wedding.
