(550 Words)
Flying with an infant might seem about as fun as a root canal to some, however the proper steps can make it as painless as possible. Different methods done before and during the flight can help make it easier on you and your child.
Take timing into consideration when planning the flight
Most infants take significant naps during the day. Some parents find it easier to plan a flight during their nap time. If you are lucky, your child will sleep for the duration of the flight. Unfortunately, you cannot always count on this since the new experience may keep them awake, however it may be worth a try. Otherwise you may want to pick a time when they are generally in a good mood such as in the morning after they have had a nice night’s sleep.
Purchase a ticket for them and bring their car seat
Most parents find it easier if they purchase a ticket for their child and bring along their car seat. Although there is an added cost, your child will be safer since he or she will be properly restrained should you hit turbulence. It will also be much easier for you not to hold your child the entire time. Many kids sleep better in a car seat as well.
Bring food and drink for your child
Many children have difficulty with their ears flying during a plane. Eating and drinking may help to ease some of this pain. It also may just make the trip more comfortable since they are less likely to be hungry. Make sure that you bring enough for them. You may want to bring items that they particularly enjoy. Of course make sure to know about any restrictions that the plane has as far as what you can bring.
Bring toys or other diversions
Many infants have toys or dolls that can entertain them, even if only for a little while. It may be worthwhile to bring whatever may be of use to distract your child during the flight, especially if it is a long one.
Dress your child comfortably
You want your child to be comfortable for the flight. Do not worry about bringing the cutest outfit, but instead bring the most comfortable. You may want to dress him or her in layers if you are not sure of the temperature.
Bring an extra change of clothing and diapers
One of your nightmares might be your child vomiting on the plane or soiling his or her diaper. It will be much worse if you do not have a change of clothing for him or her. Remember that you cannot go down below to get your extra clothing so make sure that you have enough with you. You may want several changes. Also, bring items like baby wipes to clean him or her up as well as other essentials to help you make this change should it be necessary.
Flying with an infant may be a challenge, but it can be easier if you take the right steps. Of course make sure that your child is healthy before he or she flies. A small problem such as an ear infection can become a much larger issue while on a flight. Follow the above tips to have a successful flight.
