Milk cartons can be used to make a variety of different crafts suitable for the residents of a nursing home. When using milk cartons you will want to be sure to completely clean them out before use. You do not want them to smell badly or even get someone sick because of spoiled milk. Consider the following craft ideas for nursing homes.
Flower pot
The nursing home residents can make a flower pot out of a milk carton. You can take the milk carton and cut off the top part. You can start with any size milk carton you want. You can make it as tall or as short as you’d like. Depending on the type of plant you want to put in, you might decide to poke holes in the bottom so that water can go in and out. You can then cover the sides of the milk carton with glued on construction paper. Then the nursing home residents can get to work. They can decorate the outside of the milk carton with art supplies such as markers, crayons, colored pencils and more. You can also glue on embellishments such as glitter, feathers, beads, sequins, or other pieces of construction paper. When they are done you can fill it with soil and a plant. Alternatively, if you do not want to deal with a real plant, you can put in tissue paper and fake silk flowers. You can also have the nursing home residents make fake flowers out of popsicle sticks and construction paper as another craft.
Pen/pencil holder
You can make a pen and pencil holder with your milk carton. For this you might want to use a very small milk carton such as a pint size one. You can also use a quart sized one and just cut it very short. Have them decorate it as described above.
Flower vase
Another idea is to use the milk carton to make a flower vase. For this you might want a tall quart size milk carton. Again, cut off the very top, cover it in construction paper and have the residents decorate it as described above. You can then put in real or fake fresh flowers.
There are many great crafts that you can do with nursing home residents and milk cartons. Make sure to gear the difficulty to the skills and abilities of the residents. Consider the above projects when planning your craft.
