: Different Ways to Prevent Internet Credit Card Fraud
:
(414 Words)
Internet credit card fraud is all too common nowadays. Unsuspecting individuals get caught unawares, and by the time they notice someone might have bought $5000 in electronics and jewelry on your dime. Although it is difficult to prevent every occurrence of this clever crime, there are different steps that you can take to avoid it. Consider the following strategies.
Do not give your credit card number out to people who e-mail you
As you gaze at your e-mail, you see a notice from your credit card company. They need you to confirm something, and by the way could you include your credit card number? The answer should be a definitive NO. This is one of the easiest scams to perpetrate. Just send a bunch of people e-mails that look like they are from the common credit card companies and wait for people to hand you their numbers. Most of the time, a credit card company is not going to send an e-mail like that to you. If you think that it might be legitimate, then call the customer service number on the back of your credit card so that you know you are talking to the right people and ask if they need anything from you.
Another sadly common one is that people e-mail supposedly from charities asking for credit card numbers to give donations. Then they take your goodwill and your money. Instead of giving your card number to one of these you can look for a charity that you know is legitimate such as the Red Cross, Care or others. If you want to give to that particular charity, then you should do research on it to make sure that it is real and then donate through their official website (even if the e-mail is talking about a real charity, it doesn’t mean that they represent them).
Do not give your credit card to websites you do not trust
There are many websites that would love to take your credit card number and charge away. A website might look like it is selling legitimate items but what they might be doing instead is taking your money. You can often find information on the Internet about legitimate and not-so-legitimate companies. You can also buy on places like ebay and amazon, where you do not have to give your credit card number directly to the sellers.
Do not become another credit card theft statistic. Use the above tactics to avoid this happening to you.
