Concentration in children is a product of many different influences. Knowing these factors may help you to increase the concentration that your child or student has. Consider the following points.
Physical well-being
Some children have difficulty concentrating if they are not physical well. Of course if they have some sort of physical ailment such as a sickness then they may find it difficult to focus amidst the discomfort. They can also be affected if they are not eating properly or if they do not get enough sleep. For instance, if they are tired, they may be thinking about sleeping instead of the task at hand. To remedy this it is important to make sure that children eat balanced and healthy meals and get enough sleep.
Mental and emotional disorders
Various disorders can shorten the concentration that a child may have. For instance, if the child has attention deficit disorder, or ADD, then they often have difficulty paying attention to something for a prolonged period of time. Some children are also very hyperactive, and their concentration may suffer because of it. Other children have other disorders such as depression or anxiety. You should be sure to fully address any of these other issues when looking to increase the concentration of students.
The atmosphere
Children may be affected by their atmosphere when trying to concentrate. They might be more likely to focus in a quiet and mature atmosphere and have more difficulty when things are hectic. Some children are more sensitive to this than others. For instance, some may be able to concentrate in even loud places while others need complete silence in order to focus on something. Also, some children are more susceptible to distractions. You may want to minimize these as much as possible to not be in competition with the activity that they are supposed to be concentrating on. It is important to make sure to provide the right classroom atmosphere.
Home activities
Children can be encouraged to concentrate at home, and with practice might improve. For instance, if you have a child that has concentration issues, then you can give them some quiet activities like reading a book or doing some activity sheets. You can also just talk to them about strategies they might employ if they are old enough to understand and want to improve.
There are many factors that influence concentration in children, including the above factors.
