Dietary decisions are influenced by many different factors. Every person feels a different combination of these and acts on them in different ways. The following are some common ones.
The healthiness of the food
Many people base their dietary decisions on how healthy the food is. How you eat can greatly affect how long you live. For someone who is very much into health and wants to live as well and as long as possible, they are going to look to eat the items that have been proven to be better for you. For instance, they will probably eat a lot of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, carrots and salads. These can help fight a variety of conditions from heart disease to cancer. They may eat healthy fruits, whole grains and more. They may stay away from particularly unhealthy foods like fried foods, fat-laden red meat, creamy sauces, cakes, cookies and more. They may eat balanced meals.
The taste
Most people base their decisions on what to eat at least somewhat on taste. Of course, you want to eat something that you think tastes good. Just because it is healthy does not mean that food can’t be flavorful. Of course some will eat food that is very bad for them just because they enjoy it.
Weight loss
Many people make dietary decisions based on how they will work with weight loss goals. A lot of people are on diets. They may try to eat healthier or foods that are lower in calories in order to lose weight. They may shun desserts and limit their food consumption as a whole to lose weight.
Familial and cultural influences
Many people eat as adults like they ate as children. Perhaps there were family recipes that have been passed down through generations and which produce “comfort food.” Many people learn from a very young age what to eat and they just stick to that. This also might ring true for the healthiness of the food.
Different cultures also eat very different types of food. Certain foods are eaten more in certain countries.
Food prices
A lot of people are swayed by food prices in their dietary decisions. You may want to eat gourmet five course meals every meal, but that can get expensive. Some people are more sensitive to this than others.
There are many factors that influence dietary decisions. The ones listed above may influence you.
