Factors that Affect the Tourism Industry
The tourism industry is affected by a variety of different factors. Some of these factors affect certain destinations while others affect tourism as a whole. The following are some of these issues.
The economy
The tourism industry is greatly affected by the economy. If people are losing their jobs and worrying about how they are going to pay for rent or for their mortgage then they are certainly not going to worry about taking that Caribbean cruise. Even if someone is weathering the storm okay, they might be worried about the future and may choose to save their money right now instead of spend it on something like travel. For many, travel is considered a luxury to be done with extra money when times are good. When times are bad, this might be one of the first things to go. This might be especially true for the more expensive traveling options such as the very pricey cruises.
Gas prices
Prices in gas can also have an effect on the tourism industry. First if people are spending more on gas, they may not want to take long road trips that they otherwise would have gone on. They may just have less money in general if they have an added expense of pricey fuel. In addition many of the companies associated with travel such as the airliners and bus companies need to pay for gas as well. They may have an added cost even when this goes up just a little. They may need to raise their prices to account for it, which might further influence more people not to go on such a trip because of the added cost.
Natural disasters
Natural disasters can have an influence on specific destinations. First of course if people are hit by a natural disaster then they will not be worried about travelling. There are also tourist destinations that might get its own disaster, which would influence people not to go there. For instance, if California has a big earthquake, then many people might be afraid to visit Los Angeles and other tourist destinations there. When the terrorist attacks occurred in 2001 in New York, many would be travelers decided against such a trip. There are many destinations that could be subject to hurricanes such as the Caribbean islands and Florida.
There are many factors that can affect the tourism industry. The above issues are just a few of these.
