: Factors that Influence Eating Behaviors

:
(485 Words)
Eating behaviors are influenced by a variety of factors. Every person cites different reasons for their eating choices, and this often changes as a person matures and faces different health issues and influences. Consider the following factors.
How health conscious a person is
Someone who is very health conscious is going to eat far differently than someone with the philosophy that they want to enjoy their food no matter what the cost. What you eat can affect your health to a great extent, influencing whether you will get conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and more. Someone who wants to be healthy and live a long time might choose foods that are natural and healthy like vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Someone who does not care will just eat whatever they want. Many people fall somewhat in between these two categories, trying to eat generally healthy while accounting for other factors.
How you ate as a child
The eating behaviors of many are influenced by how their family and they ate as a child. For instance, if their family always had huge unhealthy meals, then they might be more likely to continue this behavior as they grow older. If instead their family focused on eating healthy, then they might carry this with them. It may be all they know.
Their likes and dislikes
Although there are some foods that are commonly liked by many (chocolate, anyone?) people do differ greatly in their tastes. Your eating behaviors will be influenced by this.
Self-restraint
A lot of the reasons for different eating behaviors can be accounted for by the differences in self-restraint. A lot of people want to eat healthy but just cannot help themselves when faced with unhealthy food options before them. Many just munch because the food is there. Some people are emotional eaters. They may eat because they are upset. Some people are good at stopping to eat when they are full whereas others will gouge.
Diets
Many Americans are overweight, and a great deal of them are on successful or unsuccessful diets. This can greatly affect someone’s eating behavior. Some people stick to a particular type of diet whereas others will just eat in moderation.
There are many other miscellaneous factors that influence eating habits. Those who are very active might get hungrier and eat more. Some people love to have huge meals whereas others have the time and inclination to eat many times throughout the day. It might depend on your work schedule and other obligations. Others eat a certain way because of specific health conditions like hypertension or diabetes. Some have moral reasons to eat a certain way such as if they are a vegetarian or vegan. All of these factors combine with those above to help a person make their eating habits. If you are not happy with yours, then take the steps to change them.
