Homeschool Lesson Plans Exploring Stars
(406 Words)
The stars hold mysteries and magic for many children, thus they are a fitting subject to include in your homeschool lesson plans. There are many different activities that you can plan with this goal in mind. Choose from among the following suggestions.
Looking through a telescope
Let the children see the wonder of the stars with their very own eyes. There are many telescopes that you can purchase. You can plan to have your child look through the telescope and then discuss what they see. What exactly they do will depend on their age. You may have a very young child draw a picture of what they see in the telescope. You can also have a textbook or pictures printed out from the Internet that shows details about the stars, planets, or other celestial bodies that they are observing. An older child can write a report about the bodies, or simply say what they see in the telescope. You should especially try to plan these when there is a special celestial event such as when a star is especially bright.
Visiting a science museum
Your homeschooling lesson plans can include a trip to a science museum that deals with space. If you live near Washington D.C., for instance, you can visit the Smithsonian museum. If you live near one of the NASA museums or the Kennedy Space Center, you can visit there. Your children can do the hands-on activities and see real relics from actual space missions.
Astronomy arts and crafts
A younger child may be able to learn about astronomy by doing arts and crafts. For instance, they can make a model of the sun. They can use art supplies to draw a picture of different stars. You can show your child photographs of stars and explain how they differ.
Teach about the life cycle of stars
Stars change dramatically from when they are “born’ until when they “die.” Different types of stars go through this process in different ways. You can teach your child about this. You can use educational videos or show photographs from telescopes. You can ask your children to do their own research and write it out in a report. Younger children can draw illustrations of the stars.
Children of all ages enjoy exploring the stars. There are many lesson plans that can help you bring this subject to life. Try different methods to give your kids a lesson in astronomy.
