: How Technology Contributes to Childhood Obesity
:
(409 Words)
Childhood obesity is a growing and dangerous problem suffered by kids all over the country. One factor that has contributed to this disaster is the advance of technology. The following ideas suggest the role that technology has played.
Children spend time utilizing technology when they would otherwise have been playing in more physical activities
A large part of childhood obesity stems from the fact that many children are much less active today than in the past. Part of this is that technology gives them so many ways to entertain themselves while sitting in a chair. For instance, many children in the past would have fun by playing a game of tag, baseball or just running around a playground. Today these same kids are playing video games, surfing on the Internet, chatting with their friends, watching HD television and doing more technology-related activities. With less physical activity, they do not burn as many calories and may be more at risk for childhood obesity.
Their parents may go out less with them
The Internet has allowed many parents to do things from the comfort of their own home that they once had to go out for. One significant example is shopping. Many parents buy things like groceries, clothing and books at sources like www.amazon.com as well as the many stores on the Internet. In the past, they may have gone out and taken their child with them, allowing them the opportunity for some physical activity while walking around a store.
Kids may connect via the Internet rather than in person
Some kids might have had more physical activity while going over a friend’s house and playing outside. Now many just send text messages to each other instead.
They may eat more while they are engaged in these sedentary technology-related activities
It is difficult to munch on some French fries or candy while you running after your friends in a heated game of basketball. If you are sitting in front of your new 3D television, however, a child may be munching away on buttery popcorn, even if they are not hungry. When they are around the house instead of out and about they may just eat because the food is readily available.
In many ways, childhood obesity is influenced and often increased with technology. Steps should be taken to combat this such as by using the Wii Fit, which can provide some exercise. The above factors are those that should be considered.
