How to Avoid becoming a Workaholic

Being a workaholic can affect your family and personal life and can leave you feeling burned out. Sometimes people purposefully do it whereas other times it just happens. Consider the following steps for avoiding this.
Consider the field you go into
In some fields, you are much more likely to become a workaholic. For instance, many lawyers work long hours. Others work in a job that is a very solid eight hours, however, where you can’t bring home work and are less likely to become a workaholic. When thinking about the fields that you are going to get into and the jobs that you are looking for, think about this.
Think about the hours that you are at work
Some people stay at work far longer than they need to. They may use it as a form of escape or just become obsessed with it. If you are there way before everyone and staying way later even though you are seeing diminishing returns on what you are getting back, then think about cutting back. Sometimes the more you work the more you get paid. The money might be nice but think about the importance of time. Having all that money might not help you if all you do is work and are missing out on a lot of the important things in life.
Don’t be afraid to delegate to others
In many jobs the workaholics are doing more than their share of work. Perhaps you are letting others take advantage of you and doing their work. Perhaps you are the boss and have plenty of people that you can give some work to. Do not be afraid to say no to someone who is asking you to do work. Also, it is okay to start delegating. Sometimes you get the feeling that you have to do it in order to get it done right, however there are a lot of capable people out there.
Separate your work life from your home life
You see the people who are supposedly spending quality time with their children on the playground and yet they are on their cell phone with work. Of course, there are times when it cannot be helped, but try as much as possible to separate it. Things will be okay without you. Turn off your cell phone while you are watching your daughter’s soccer game. Give your spouse and your kids your full attention. Don’t spend your time that is supposed to belong to your family or you worrying about work.
If you are a workaholic you may want to take steps to help yourself. The above tips can help you avoid this state.
