There are many factors you will want to consider when choosing the pregnancy exercise routine that is right for you. Consider the following strategies.
Look for something that is safe for pregnancy
Not all exercises are safe for pregnancy. That karate class might seem great normally, but you obviously do not want to get kicked in the stomach. Also, a lot of people will advise against doing something with a high risk of falling such as horseback riding. A lot of weight bearing exercises are also not recommended.
You also want to look for something that does not get you overly taxed. There is no one amount of intensity in a workout that is right for every pregnant woman since everyone is in different shape. Some doctors suggest a limit of 140 or 150 beats per minute heart rate. Others feel that it is more how you are handling the workout and might want you to be able to hold a conversation and not get too breathless.
Look for workout videos or classes that are particularly made for pregnant women
There are some specialty exercise videos that you can purchase that are made specifically for pregnant women. These include aerobics videos. You can find different ones online at places like www.amazon.com. You can look for ones that are more highly rated like Sanders’ Prenatal Workout, Pregnancy: Pre and Post Natal Workouts by Heather Seiniger and Austin: Fit & Firm Pregnancy by Denise Austin. You can read the reviews and see what others liked and did not like about the videos as well as the descriptions of how the videos progress. You may find one that matches your goals. You also may find classes at a gym or other centers that are specifically for expectant mothers.
A lot of the simpler exercise routines are good for pregnant women too. A lot of women like riding a stationary bike while pregnant. It is easy to control how hard you do it, you can get aerobic exercise and you do not have the same risk of falling as with a lot of other exercises, especially if you choose a recumbent bicycle.
Also consider how hard you work while outside if it is hot. You may be more sensitive to the heat while you are pregnant.
No matter what, you should talk to your obstetrician before starting any exercise routine during pregnancy because it is not recommended for some women. You can also talk to him or her about any routines that they recommend. Exercise can help you stay at a healthier weight, keep yourself in shape and even have a better delivery. Consider the above strategies to find the workout that is right for you.
