How to Buy a Home Alarm System
A home alarm system offers many features depending on the brand and model. When shopping for a system, look at the available options to decide what meets your needs. You will find many choices for different security issues and budgets.
Monitored versus unmonitored system
In a monitored system, someone at a main center is notified if the alarm is tripped. This adds an extra layer of security because you will not have to wait for someone to call the police. Generally the call center calls the house, and if they cannot get the all clear from you, they will send out the authorities. The big disadvantage of a monitored system is that it generally ends up costing far more than a system without the monitoring because you usually pay a monthly fee for the entirety of the service.
Alarm
Of course the most obvious feature of the system is the alarm itself. You want something that will be loud enough to get attention and hopefully scare off the intruder. Different systems offer different types of alarms; try to listen to a sample before you purchase.
Window break sensors
These sensors detect when a window is broken. It may know when the glass breaks or can be embedded into a screen. Windows are a common form of entrance for a burglar.
Door sensors
Look for an alarm with sensors by the doors. This will tell you if someone forces the door open.
Motion detectors
A lot of home alarm system offer motion detection. It will go off when it senses motion. This may not work if you have a pet or when you are moving about the house.
Computerized information system
Many of the new systems are tied into a computer system. If the alarm is tripped, you can go to a panel and see where the breach is. This will save you from running around the house, desperately looking for the problem.
Video monitoring
Some home alarm systems offer video monitoring. You can see who is in and outside your house. If a would-be burglar sees a video camera, he or she may be more likely to leave. It also might help you identify the culprit after the fact. Some of these allow you to view your home on the Internet.
Protection against other problems
Some systems such as ADT offer protection against more than home invasions. Some of them will have a fire detection system or carbon monoxide detection, which can save your life.
Generally the more complex the system, the more money it will cost. Some will not be as useful or necessary depending on particular circumstances. For instance, someone who is worried about a burglar coming in while they are home will not find the motion detector to be as useful since it can’t be on if you are moving around the house. It would work well for a home that is empty a lot during the day, however. Evaluate the features you needs as well as the cost when making your decision.
