The views on birth control vary according to the individual parent. Although most parents would prefer that their teenagers are not sexually active, the reality is that many will be with or without their parents’ consent, and a talk about birth control can prevent an unwanted pregnancy. Consider the following tips for this discussion.
First start off with your feelings on sexual intercourse in general
You want your teenager to understand how you feel about sexual intercourse, especially if you feel that they are not ready. You can explain not only how you feel but why you feel that way.
Stay calm
This is a very sensitive topic for both you and your teenager. You want to stay calm and logical. Do not allow your emotions to turn you into a dictator so that your teenager just runs off and takes no precautions whatsoever.
Discuss the different birth control options
If the realization comes that your teenager is going to be sexually active no matter what you say or do, then you will want to make sure that they take the proper precautions. You can talk about the different types of birth control options out there, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. Some that you might discuss include the use of condoms or birth control pills. Talk about the methods that have a high rate of failure such as pulling out or trying to time by the month. There is a lot of information that you can find on reputable websites that can give you information about the efficacy of these methods. You can explain exactly how each is used. Allow your teenager to ask questions. If the teenager wishes to see a physician about these then you can accompany him or her to the appointment.
Discuss how the forms of birth control relate to sexually transmitted diseases
Pregnancies can be prevented in many ways that do not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. You want your teenager to understand that just because a form of birth control is very effective at the one, that does not mean that it necessarily has any affect at all again STDs. You might use this opportunity to talk about the risk of STDs and the forms of birth control that can work to (but not 100% prevent) both.
You want your teenager to feel that he or she can come to you to ask questions or if there is a problem. Use the above tips to help you discuss the sensitive topic of birth control with your kids.
