How to Prevent Food Borne Illnesses
Food borne illnesses cause many sicknesses every single day, some of them very serious. A lot of these problems are very easily preventable if a few simple steps are taken. The following are some easy ways to prevent food borne illnesses.
Do not keep food out for too long
Many foods should only be out for a specific amount of time because they can spoil and become bad. If you consume certain foods that have been left out too long such as meats, then you can get sick. There are different guidelines based on the type of food, and you should be aware of this. The guidelines may different depending on whether foods are refrigerated, fresh, cooked, etc. If it stays out too long, then you might want to throw it away. This can happen a lot of times with leftover food that people get from restaurants but then keep out because they do not go directly home.
Wash cutting boards thoroughly
A lot of times people have trouble because of contaminated cutting boards. They may use a cutting board for meat for instance, and then use it for a vegetable without cleaning it. They may then go on to take the correct handling precautions with them, but it might be too late if the vegetables have been contaminated with the raw meat. You might cook the raw meat but the vegetable might just get left out and the bacteria might stay alive. Furthermore, few people might think of the vegetable as the culprit. It is very important to clean cutting boards well. In addition to cleaning cutting boards well, you should be sure to clean other surfaces which could have been exposed to items such as raw meat, uncooked eggs, etc.
Do not keep items past their expiration dates or for too long
A lot of people will continue to eat food even if it is past its expiration date or at the point that it is too old. There are recommendations on how many days you should keep items, which can easily be found in books on food as well as on the Internet. If you surpass these times, then the food could go bad and cause illness.
Buy from reputable sources
You should make sure that you are comfortable with the sources from which you are purchasing your food. No matter how well you handle it, it will not matter if it was not handled correctly before it reached you. Also, do not eat food if the packaging is open, damaged or has been tampered with.
Cook food as thoroughly as recommended
Many people become sick because they eat undercooked foods. This can especially happen with meats. Make sure to cook it as recommended for that particular type of food.
Many people get food poisoning every day, but it often can be prevented. Consider the above precautions to minimize your chances of such an illness.
