(429 Words)
What a milestone – your child’s first day of school. You might have difficulty dealing with this day so imagine how they are feeling. The following are tips on how to help your child adjust to going to school.
Play it up as an exciting event and not a scary one
Do not ask your child if they are scared to be going to school. Their first thought might be “No, but should I be?” You want to play this up as a wonderful and fun thing. You do not want to even mention the word “scary” to them. Instead ask if they are excited about going to school. Talk to them about how lucky they are to get to learn new things and meet new friends.
Of course if they bring up that they are scared of going to school, then that is a different matter entirely and you will want to address it. You should give them your undivided attention to listen to their concerns no matter how trivial they seem to you. This might be the first time your child is on his or her own and it can be very scary. You should reassure them that there is nothing to be scared about. You can talk to them about your experiences in school and how you might have been scared at the very beginning but then how you liked it a lot.
You can also get them a new backpack and school supplies to use for school. That might be fun for them. You also might know some people who will be attending the school and you can talk about them. If they have an older sibling who has already gone through this, then they might be able to help them adjust as well.
Make sure that they are physically and mentally healthy
Your child might have even more difficulty adjusting to school if you let them stay up late and they are exhausted when they go in. Make sure that they go to bed in time to get a good night’s sleep. Make sure that they eat a healthy breakfast before school. Help them with any other issues that they might be facing, no matter whether they are physical or emotional.
Before your child actually goes in for that first day you might want to give him or her something to practice with. For instance, you can find a place like a gymnastics studio or museum that has a drop-off event for a few hours. Just getting them used to being without you might help.
