How to Introduce Children to Religion
If religion is an important facet of your life, then you likely want to share it with your children. You want to be very careful when introducing children to religion because you want them to embrace it and not feel overwhelmed. There are various strategies that can help you with this process.
Take them to services
Many parents introduce their children to religion by taking them to religious services at a church, temple or other religious institution. If you take them from when they are very young, then it may become second nature to them, and they may always understand that it is a part of them.
You may specifically want to look for a religious institution that has accommodations for those with younger children to make it more comfortable for your family. For instance, some religious organizations have a room set up for parents with young children. They can watch the services behind glass or on a television and be as loud as they want. Some organizations take the children to have their own special service with them. It will be geared towards the kids and may be more accommodating to them. Some other organizations have a family service for everyone every month or on another regular basis. The child may enjoy being with other children. You can also just look for a religious institution that is very friendly to young children.
Talk to your child about religion
Many parents introduce their children to religion with a talk. They can simplify it to the child’s terms. They can explain about the deity in which they believe. They may use resources such as a Bible. If the child looks up to a different family member or friend of the same religion, then the parents may enlist their help if they think the child would look more fondly upon it with their interaction. Some may also have their priest, rabbi or other religious leader talk to their child.
Place your child in religious schooling
Many religious organizations offer schooling. This will be geared towards their particular age and may provide a gentler introduction than regular services. You may even choose to put him or her in a religious preschool.
Youth Group
Another great introduction is through a religious youth group. The kids can spend time with other children while learning about the hallmarks of the religion. As their watch their friends interested in the religion, they may become so too.
There is no one right path when introducing children to religion. Do so at a pace that is right for you and your child. The above strategies may help you share this important facet of life with your kids.
