A professional biography is an important opportunity to introduce yourself to your audience. Whether it is on a website, a book or a different source, you want to take the brief opportunity to appear knowledgeable and professional. Consider the following tips on how to introduce yourself professionally in such a manner.
Make it third person
Most brief bios are made in third person form. It does not seem quite as professional when you are saying “I” in the book jacket.
Start off with a great opening sentence that defines you
Think long and hard about how to begin your brief bio Typically, your name will appear in the first sentence (you want them to know who you are talking about). You may want to give the “gist” of what you are. You can also place something very admirable in there. For instance, one beginning is “Clark Johnson is an award-winning journalist, specializing in foreign affairs.” It is a great place to say what your job is. You want them to be impressed from the very beginning.
Pack a lot of information in a little space
This is a brief bio, and you should not go on and on and on. You want the bio to have a lot of information such as your name, where you were born, your current job, admirable experience in the field, a big award, a sentence on personal information (marriage/children), etc. Try to relate it to what it is for. For instance, if it is for the website of your public relations company, then you can put in some information about your past in this field. Try to make the sentences short and sweet. They should not be long flowing sentences that you would see in a fanciful novel. Before you start the bio, it may behoove you to put in an outline of what you want.
Read through it for typographical errors
Before you consider your brief bio concluded to perfection, you will want to read through it to make sure that you have addressed any errors such as spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. A brief bio is by definition short, thus even one small error may be noticed. You should make sure that it flows well and is well written. You may want to have another writer read through it and provide a critique.
A brief bio should explain who you are and what you have done as related to the application. Utilize the above tips to help you create such prose.
