: Why Distance Learning may be the Wrong Choice for you

:
(475 Words)
Distance learning can be a great way to learn, however it is not for everyone. Certain people will not find the success they would see in a more traditional setting. The following are reasons why distance learning may be the wrong choice for you.
You learn best when you are in class in person
If you learn better by being right there in a physical class with the teacher right in front of you, then distance learning might not be for you. You will probably be learning off of your computer. Many people just cannot focus on a tiny person on a screen or on words that come up on their computer. They may really need to be able to hear and see it in real life.
Also, in many schools the teachers have office hours. If you have trouble you can go to them during these time for extra help. In a distance learning situation you might be able to e-mail them or even talk on the phone but that is often not the same as having the teacher in front of you correcting your work by hand as you look down on it while he is explaining something to you out of the book.
It may be more difficult to interact with your professor, which some find not as conducive to learning
When you are in class, you can usually go back and forth with the teacher, asking questions or asking him or her to elaborate on something. In many distance learning situations, the lesson is pre-recorded thus you cannot ask questions as they are teaching it. Some students may find that they can get lost and then not be able to follow the rest of the lesson.
You give in to distractions
There is less to be distracted about in a classroom with the teacher right in front of you than in your home. For instance, you may not be able to help yourself from answering your telephone, stopping to get a snack, surfing on the Internet or checking your e-mail while you are supposed to be doing your distance learning coursework. Once you get distracted it may take you a long time to regain your focus. You may take twice as long to listen to one lesson than it would have taken if you had been in the actual class.
It may be easier to get behind
In some distance learning situations, you can watch classes when you want. You may procrastinate and get very far behind. If the classes are scheduled at a more traditional school, then you may keep up better.
Of course many learning institutions have more to offer than the learning such as extracurricular activities that you will also miss out on with distance learning. Consider the above factors when deciding whether distance learning is for you.
