: How to keep Pets Safe from Household Chemicals

:
(439 Words)
Many people are used to keeping their kids safe from household chemicals, but they might not think about their pets. However pets can get just as hurt from these innocent looking chemicals, and it is important to take them into consideration. Try the following tips for safeguarding your pet.
Keep your chemicals up high
Obviously most pets are far shorter than most humans. Keeping the household chemicals high can be a great strategy, however you will want to consider several things when you try this. First, if the animal can climb such as if it is a cat, then make sure that it cannot get to it. Also, consider whether the animal can knock into anything and make the chemicals fall such as if a large dog charges into a bookcase, making it shake and the household chemical on top of it to fall.
Keep your chemicals in locked cabinets
Few dogs have learned to use keys, thus this can be a great strategy to keep your animal safe from household chemicals. You can get all sorts of different locks and some that are made for children will work for animals as well. Just make sure that they will be able to withstand your animal knocking into them as hard as they can. Also, if it in a locked box, consider what will happen if your animal causes the box to fall to the floor.
Keep the household chemicals in an area of the house your pet does not go into
Many people keep certain rooms off-limits to their animals. You can store the household chemicals in there. Make sure that the door is always kept closed so they cannot get in.
Do not leave household chemicals unattended
Even if your normal storage spot for the chemicals is safe, you can still have a problem if you leave them out right after you are done or even if you leave them while you go into the other room for a minute. If your pet takes them and goes elsewhere with them then you cannot force them to tell you where they went. Take them with you at all times to avoid such a problem.
Make sure to use household chemicals that are safe for pets
Some household chemicals are not safe around pets, especially if you use them in their areas. Some are safe to use but you need to give them a chance to dry or air out. Make sure to look at the bottles for precautions you should take.
Take care with household chemicals to keep your pets safe. The above tips can aid you in this.
