How to keep the Holidays Meaningful
For some, the holidays have become a commercial venture. You may worry about giving and receiving the right gifts and about attending every party you can, no matter how well – or how little – you know the person. In light of this shortsighted focus, many now strive to make the holidays more meaningful, and they may do so in the following ways.
Celebrate the religious aspects of the holidays
Many of the big holidays such as Hanukkah and Christmas are based, of course, on religion. To keep these meaningful, you may want to focus on this part of it. Many choose to go to religious services during this time such as that at a Jewish Temple or a Church. You can talk to your kids about what these holidays represent and why we celebrate them. By focusing on this aspect instead of the gifts, you can bring their true meaning to life.
Spend time with family
Many find that spending time with the family is the most meaningful part of the holidays. It does not have to be about going to an expensive dinner or party together. You can just have them over to spend time talking. Instead of watching television when you are together, talk or do something that is quality time together such as playing a game. If you have to choose between a fancy party and your kids, then choose your kids. Also, instead of buying expensive holiday decorations, have your children make them as crafts and let them know how proud you are of them.
Do kind things for others
Many feel that the holidays are about giving to others more than getting yourself. Try to incorporate some charity into your holiday season. It may be about giving money to the Salvation Army or another charity such as CARE or the Red Cross. It may be about volunteering your time to someone in need such as at a hospital. It may be about doing something nice for friends such as cooking for someone going through a rough time. There are many ways that you can give to others, and doing so is a wonderful way to make the holidays meaningful.
You can also make your gifts meaningful. For instance, you can ask that someone donate to a cause instead of give you a gift. You can take some of the bonus money that you receive and try to do something good with it. Some people will want to get the focus off of gifts entirely and will not do presents at all.
You may feel much better about the holidays if you make them meaningful. The above ways can allow you to accomplish this.
