How to Level an above Ground Swimming Pool

It is vital for an above-ground swimming pool to be on level ground. Without an even area, the pool may not be as structurally sound as it should be. Take the following steps to level a pool.
First, it is important to choose an appropriate location for your above-ground swimming pool. Obviously you are not going to have a level pool if you build it on the side of a hill. However, even gentle slopes can cause problems. You can spend some time leveling the ground, but the more level it is when you start, the less work you will have to perform.
You should rid the ground of any plants, grass and other vegetation. Anything that remains can grow and cause the pool to be uneven. Depending on the amount of vegetation you have, you may need specific tools to help you accomplish this such as a sod cutter. Obviously a shovel will be one of the most useful resources in this. As much as possible, get out the roots of the plants, because they may otherwise continue to grow up and can affect the pool. Weed killer can also be useful. You should also remove rocks, sticks and any other items that could affect the pool.
Once you have all of the vegetation out, you want to make the ground as level as possible. If it is noticeably larger on one side, use shovels or other tools to make it more even. Backyard City Pools recommends digging out the higher area rather than attempting to add dirt to the lower areas.
Level Ground Pool recommends the use of sand to level a pool. First, you must make sure that there is no more than a 2 inch difference in the ground throughout the area. You should then add sand, placing more in the areas that are lower.
It is not enough for the ground to be generally level. You will need to make certain that it is truly as even as possible. There are different ways to accomplish this. A transit or laser level is the best method. If you do not have access to such a device, then you can instead use a carpenter’s level paired with a long 2×4.
One method is to place the long 2×4 in the middle of the area. Place a 3/8 rod through the center of it where your pool center will be. Spin the rod, leveling the ground as you go.
If you have used sand in the leveling process, you will want to compact it. Water from either rain or a hose can help accomplish that. After it is wet, use a tamper to compact it. Make sure that there is some extra space along the edges.
