How to Make a Puppet Show Theater
A puppet theater can provide hours of entertainment for your little one. He or she can let his or her imagination go wild by putting the puppets into action. Instead of buying a theater, you can make your child his or her own special customized theater. One inexpensive and easy method is to use a large cardboard box as the base of your puppet theater.
Start with a large cardboard box. You can reuse one that was used for shipping or buy one. The exact size is up to you -“ think about how big you want it to be to accommodate the puppets as well as how much room it would take to store. You want it to have a large footprint, but it can be very shallow.
Once you have your box, place it down so that it is right side up (sitting on the largest side). Cut off the top flaps so that it is now an open box that canâ™t be closed. Now you want to make sure that it is shallow so that your child doesnâ™t have to reach in too far to do the puppet show. If it is not already shallow use box cutters or scissors to cut down the sides so that it isnâ™t more than about 6 inches deep except for the side that it will be standing on. Leave this longer so it can support it.
Now it is time to cut through the bottom of the box, which will be the opening for the puppet show. You do not want to cut out the entire bottom because there will need to be room for your child to hide his or her hand where he or she is holding the puppet. Depending on how large the box is you might want to leave six inches to a foot at the bottom. You can then cut out a big square for the show.
Now you are ready to decorate the box. Turn it over so that you can see the front of the theater. Pick out a pretty fabric and line the entire front with it. You can add embellishments such as crystals or sequins. Instead of lining wit with fabric, you can use paper or even paint it instead.
Now it is time to add the curtains. Get some pretty fabric. It can match the fabric lining the theater or be different. The fabric should cover the entire front of the theater. Cut it into two parts, one for each side. Glue the two pieces on to the top of the theater so that they can hang down and cover the entire theater. Place matching Velcro parts on the curtain and the sides of the theater so that you can move each curtain to the side to open the theater. Alternatively, you can glue a piece of string to each side, which can be used to gather the curtains.
Add any additional decorations. Your child is now ready to start the puppet show.
