How to Minimize Winter Heating Bills
Winter heating bills can read like a horror novel, and to some extent you cannot change the fact that there will be extra costs associated with this time of year, especially if you live in a colder climate. Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do to minimize your winter heating bill.
Turn down the heat
Of course, the simplest thing that can be done to lower winter heating bills is to lower that thermostat. During the day, you may be able to dress warmer in the house with more layers of heavier clothes. You may also find that you just get accustomed to a slightly lower temperature. Also, you may be able to turn the thermostat down during the night without noticing it too much. Use extra blankets to keep yourself warm.
Even a difference of a few degrees can make a difference on those bills, especially when you spread it over the entire winter. One degree can equate to 3% on your bill, according to Karen Tolan, associate director for Kent County’s Community Action Division of Acset. A humidifier may help keep you more comfortable with lower temperatures.
You can also lower the thermostat on the water heater to 120 degrees. This can save 20% of the energy, and a lower water heater is safer for those with children as an added bonus.
Do not lose as much heat through the windows
Residents do not realize how much heat is lost through windows resulting in increased heating bills. There are a number of things that you can do in order to save. First, make sure that the outside of the window is caulked, including under the sills. You can also use temporary silicone caulk on the inside if you will not be opening it for the winter. You can get one that can be opened in an emergency. You can also caulk doorways and use weather stripping.
You can also lose heat through the glass of the windows. Get thick window treatment or use quilts or even thick fabric over the windows for those cold gray days. When it is sunny outside, opening them may help to warm your home. This will help to minimize your bills.
Some people choose to open the door or windows for whatever reason during the winter. Remember that cold air enters fast, so try to keep these closed as much as possible to reduce your bills.
Consider added insulation
Added insulation may be a cost, however you may find that your returns year after year greatly make up for any expenditures. There are many different ways that insulation can be added to a home depending on the construction. There may be some things that you can do yourself.
Further measures
You may want to replace your furnace or water heater with energy efficient models. Moving to natural gas can also save you money if it is available in your residence. Keep your air filter clean to improve efficiency.
Winter heating bills do not have to skyrocket. Take the above measures to save significantly on this cost.
