How to Negotiate a Price on a new Car
(415 Words)
Negotiating the price of a new car may seem like a challenge, but certain strategies can give you the best chance of success. Practice your negotiating skills and heed the following tips.
The first thing to remember as you start the negotiations is to always stay calm. It does not matter if you would trade everything you own for the car – certainly do not let him know that. Appear unaffected and willing to walk away from a deal that is not to your liking.
Right away let him know you are knowledgeable. You should have come armed with research on the prices of similar new cars in the area as well as incentives. You should have an idea of what they pay for the car as well. A great deal of information is available at resources such as Consumer Reports.
When you start negotiating, make it clear that you are negotiating the total price of the car, including any so-called dealer’s fees. Dealers love to play a sneaky trick in which they negotiate on a price and then throw in a $500 or more fee at the end for the vague term of dealer’s fees. It is just another way to squeeze money out of you. Tell them that you want the total price including any fees beyond tax, tag and title.
Start off with a price that is low, of course, but do not make it ridiculously low. Do not offer $10,000 for a car that has a fair price of $20,000. He will just come back with an equally ridiculous offer and not think that you are serious or knowledgeable.
You want to decide what you are willing to pay for the car, and be strong not to go above that. You can show that you are willing to work with him a little but you do not have to go back and forth , back and forth. When you get to the point that you want to be at, you can say that this is what you can do to buy it today. If he does not meet you, then you can walk out. It does not mean that you cannot come back in and buy it for the higher price if he does not give in. You might just have a message waiting for you when you get home.
With careful negotiating, you can get a great deal on a new car. Take your time to find the right deal for you.
