How to Negotiate the Price on a new Car

(439 Words)
You can negotiate the price on a new car just as you can on a used car. The following strategies can help you get the price you desire.
Make sure that you are well-armed with all of the necessary information before you go into the dealership. You should know the amount of money that you have to pay for a car and the types of cars that should fit into your budget. Be sure to consider additional costs such as taxes. You should also look up the prices that the cars are generally selling for in your area as well as how much the dealer generally pays for them.
When you go in, calmly tell the dealer what you are looking for. Even if you are determined to leave with a car that day no matter how much it costs, do not let him know that. You want him to think that you are just as happy to walk away.
You can start with an offer that is low, but reasonable. Show him that you are knowledgeable and are serious about the deal. Ignore any protests that he is giving you an amazing deal just for you, that he is losing money on the deal or that you cannot do better elsewhere. Chances are none of these are true.
You can give a little so that he feels like he is getting something. Explain your price point. Talk about the research so that he knows he will not be able to “pull one over on you.” Make sure that the price you are negotiating on is the final price. It is not unusual for a dealer to negotiate on a price and then list an expensive dealer’s fee on the contract. This is just a practice to raise the price. Make it clear that you are negotiating on the total price including any fees.
Do not ever get emotional in the process. Obviously you like the car enough to negotiate on it, but do not ever let him or her think that you are too eager to get it. Because it is a new car, you will likely be able to find the same or similar car elsewhere so you will have more pull than when you are bidding on a one of a kind used car.
At any point feel free to say that this is your maximum price. You can even walk out or say that you need to think about it. If you are close, he may give in at that point.
With good negotiating skills you can get your new car at a fair price.
