How to Plan for an Extended Trip
(553 Words)
There is much to plan when you are going to be away for an extended period of time. You will want to make certain that you plan as much in advance as possible to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Besides giving you peace of mind, the availability of rooms, airfare and more will be greatest when you give yourself time.
Unless you know exactly where you are staying (i.e. you are visiting a relative), you want to carefully research your options for accommodations. Of course you can stay at a traditional hotel, but with an extended trip you will have other options as well. You will often be able to get good deals at a motel or hotel that specializes in extended stays such as Extended Stay America. If your trip is going to last months or more you can also consider renting an apartment. You may be able to sublet a place for a certain amount of time. Make sure that you do not commit to more time than your trip. Another option might be to swap an apartment or home with someone. You will be able to live without rent and have someone take care of your house at the same time.
Make plans for your transportation. Many will choose to drive to their destination (if within a reasonable distance) so that a car will be available. If you cannot drive such as if you are travelling overseas, then make plans for renting a car.
Think about all of the little things that need to be done. Make a list to help you remember everything. Get extra medications or transfer the prescriptions to a pharmacy near your destination. Make a list of the items that you need to pack. Think about what is available there and what you may need to bring from home.
Besides planning for your trip away, you will also need to make plans for everything back at home. Because you will be gone for an extended amount of time, you will have to do things that a shorter trip would not necessitate. For instance, instead of just stopping your mail for a few days, you will probably want to forward it to your new location. The Postal Service can set this up for you. You should also make arrangements with your newspaper.
If anyone or anything is dependent upon you, then you will need to make plans for them. Make certain that you either have someone taking care of your animals or that you place them in a boarding facility that accepts long-term borders. Make sure that the payment for such services is made. Remember that even your plants will need care. Important people should have the information on where you will be and how to contact you while you are on your trip. Either get a house sitter or someone to come in to check on your house.
If you are going overseas, make sure that you have the proper vaccinations. You can also consider traveler’s insurance. Know what your current health coverage is and what you may need.
An extended trip can be very exciting, and you want everything to go well both on your trip and at home while you are away. With proper preparation, you increase your chances of a smooth trip.
