(459 Words)
Food poisoning can ruin any trip overseas. It can also be dangerous if you are somewhere where medical attention is not rapidly available. Fortunately, there are steps you can take in order to minimize the chances of this happening. The following are tips for overcoming the risks of food poisoning when traveling abroad.
Bring your own food
If you are travelling for a short period of time, you might be able to bring some of your own food. Even if you do not eat it all the time you might be able to use it to supplement if there are times you are particularly worried about a source of food. You will also want to check about the different laws and regulations about bringing food to and from the country.
Make sure foods such as meats are well cooked
You are more likely to get food poisoning from certain types of foods that are undercooked such as meats. Do not eat meat with a bright red center for instance.
Do not eat foods with a high incidence of food poisoning
Certain foods such as certain sushi have a higher risk of food poisoning. They may be more vulnerable to incorrect handling procedures. You may want to avoid eating those foods while abroad.
Do your homework
When deciding how drastic you need to be in your measures you should do research into the countries you are visiting. Some countries are far more of a concern than others and if you can find out if the places you are going have this as a particular problem then you will know to be more careful. Also, you may even be able to find out information about particular foods or even restaurants that have been an issue.
Look at the restaurants when you enter them
Food poisoning can occur at “nicer” restaurants just as ones that seem not as nice can have no problems. There is a lot that you might be able to observe, however. If you walk in a restaurant and it is sparkling clean, all of the workers are wearing gloves and everything seems fresh then you might be less concerned. If somewhere seems dirty or if they seem to have bad practices then you might want to walk right out.
Ask the locals
You might be able to ask the people at the hotel, tour guides or other people with whom you are associating for places where you should – and should not – go.
When eating the food do not continue to eat anything that tastes funny. Something doesn’t have to taste bad to give you food poisoning, but it is not a good sign if it does. Use that and the above tips to help you overcome these risks.
