How to Reduce your Salt Intake
Reducing your salt intake can be very beneficial for your health. Sodium has been linked with higher blood pressure in many people, and this serious condition is responsible for many deaths every year by increasing the risk of stroke, heart disease and other serious conditions. Consider the following tips to reduce your salt intake.
Eat out less
Most restaurant food is extremely high in salt. Unless you get a dish that is specifically listed as low in salt, you must assume that it is high, even if it does not taste it. A lot of restaurant meals literally have twice the amount of sodium that an American is supposed to have in a day.
If you do want to go out to eat, then see if you can get the nutritional information of the restaurant and choose options with less salt. Sometimes you can ask that they hold the salt from certain items such as vegetables, potatoes and bread.
Eat less television dinners (or specifically low sodium ones)
Many television dinners are full of salt. When you go to the store to pick these out, you should read the labels and try to forgo the ones with a lot of salt. They do make low sodium products.
Do not add salt to your meals
Of course you can lower your salt intake by not adding it to cooked food. It may taste bland at first but oftentimes people get used to it very quickly. You may enjoy other flavors more and start to think that things with salt now taste bad.
Cook with less salt
There are many lower salt recipes. You can even buy specific cookbooks with this focus. In a lot of recipes, you can lower or just not add salt at all and it will still do just fine. You will have to think about what the salt is for (i.e. in baking it may be a problem to remove it).
Stay away from traditionally salty foods
If you do your research you will learn that certain foods just tend to be more salty. Again something that does not taste at all salty still might be so. Unless specifically marked low sodium, soups are usually very high in salt. Pizza is extremely high. Many burgers also have a lot.
Reducing your sodium intake can help you live a healthier and longer life. The above tips can help you reduce your intake.
