There are many steps that can be taken to help prevent the transmission of the flu. The more you do, the less likely you will be to transmit and contract the flu. The following steps should be utilized to the extent possible.
Flu vaccine
The flu shot can be very effective at lowering the incidences of the flu. For most, it is a single shot, and it can be given to individuals who are at least six months of age. The CDC states that it can help in the fight against an influenza A H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the 2009 H1N1 virus. Most do no experience serious side effects. It is very important for those who are high risk to get the flu vaccine such as those who are older or who have compromised systems such as those with heart or lung problems.
The flu vaccine is widely available. Many private physicians have it, as do government clinics. You can also get it at many Target stores, many drugstores such as CVS and Walgreens and at a number of outreach organizations. Many health insurance plans cover it, and it is widely available for under $30 even without insurance.
Washing your hands
Simple hand washing can go a long way in helping to prevent the transmission of the flu. It is especially important to wash your hands after coming into contact with someone who is ill and before handling food.
Try to stay away from those who are sick
It can be difficult to distinguish the flu from other types of sicknesses. As much as possible, you should avoiding getting too close to someone else who is ill. Likewise if you are the one that is sick then try to stay away from others. You may think you are doing everyone a favor by going to work even when you are sick but if you give everyone else the flu, no one will thank you. The CDC suggests that you stay at home for 24 hours after your fever has ceased (without medical aid).
Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose if you are coughing or sneezing
These germs can easily be spread if you just sneeze. Throw out used tissues immediately.
Keep surfaces clean
If someone in the house is sick, then be sure to clean often. Wash the sheets before someone else shares them.
If you think you have the flu, you may want to visit your physician. There are medications that may be able to shorten the duration of the flu and lessen its severity. Follow your doctor’s directions and the above tips to help prevent the transmission of this potentially serious condition.
