Perhaps you do not like them. Perhaps there is something else you would rather do. Perhaps you just do not want to go. It can be difficult to tell someone that you are not going to their wedding when you do not have a good excuse. However, you should not go just because you can’t think of a way to get out of it. Consider the following methods when trying to decide what to say.
Thank them for inviting you
The first step in telling them might be a simple “Thank you.” Even if you are not glad that they invited you, you want them to feel good about it. This is their special day and you do not want to do anything to ruin it for them.
Say that you cannot go for personal reasons
It is reasonable that something personal or private might have occurred that will prevent you from going. You can just say this. It is not lying because your reasons are personal even if they are not good ones. The person might assume that the reasons are more substantial than they are, which may help them not to feel bad about it. Hopefully they will not pry. If they ask you can just reiterate that it is personal and that you would rather not talk about it.
Just say you cannot make it
You do not always need to explain yourself. Sometimes you might just want to talk about how you would like to be there but just can’t.
Even people who turn down wedding invitations will still often give a gift. This might be a nice way of making the couple feel good even though you can’t be there and make you feel better about missing it without a good reason. You can purchase something off of their registry or just buy them a little something.
Some people choose to make a little white lie when they are not going to a wedding. You will need to make your decision as to whether you want to lie. If it is just there to make the couple feel better then it can be reasonable, however you might want to consider the above methods first. Also consider what will happen if you get caught in the lie. In some cases this can be a huge problem and can affect your relationship forever. Consider that and the above ideas when telling someone you are not coming to their wedding when you do not have a good excuse.
