: Money Saving Ideas for College Students

:
(420 Words)
Many college students would love to save all of the money they can. The following are some strategies for students to conserve those funds.
Cook and eat in more than eating out
Many college students spend a lot of money on eating out. They may be used to someone cooking for them, and when that is gone they go to restaurants to fill the gap. The problem is that eating out can add up in cost quite quickly, especially when you add in tax and tip. You might want to limit it and try to get started on some cooking skills. If you have roommates, then one idea is to each take a turn cooking the meals so you do not feel like you have to cook every single day. You can also make larger portions and then freeze some of it for later. If you do choose to eat out, you might want to look for places that have specials, coupons or deals.
Look for free or low cost activities
Many colleges offer a wide range of activities for free or next to nothing. School sponsored events are often paid for by the school. You can consider these or other activities that do not cost a lot as opposed to going somewhere expensive for your entertainment.
Try to split the cost of some things with your roommates
There may be some things that you only need one of. For instance, there is probably no need to have three microwaves in your dorm room. You may be able to all chip in for one.
Buy your textbooks used
You may spend $100 or more textbooks. You can save a lot of money if you buy these used. What’s more, you might see more savings if you look for sources on the Internet to buy them instead of at the college bookstore, which is often even pricey on the used books. Likewise when you are selling it back you might want to do so through the Internet as well. Because you can ship media mail, shipping is usually not too expensive.
Consider whether you really need a car
College students can spend a lot of money on their cars. In some college towns almost everything is on campus and your car may just stay parked most of the time. Decide whether you can let go of this major expense.
There are many ways to save money as a college student. Consider the above methods in your quest to save those pennies.
