Mystery shopping can be a good way to earn a little extra cash. There are certain things that you should avoid doing when performing this activity, however. Consider the following mystery shopping “no-nos.”
Do not be overdramatic
You do not want to act like you are acting in your high school play. You should not be too overdramatic. Do not pick up item after item and make loud, fake comments. If you are talking to a salesperson do not act like you are just hanging on to their every word like life or death. You want to appear casual and nonchalant.
Do not draw attention to yourself
You want to blend in at the store. You want them to treat you like any other customer so that you get the typical experience of what shopping there would be like. You do not want them to think that you are something unusual or special and thus treat you differently. You should just act like you are on a real shopping trip.
Do not appear too knowledgeable
You may know a lot about the store and its products through research before mystery shopping. Do not act like you know way more than the typical consumer would know. You do not want the person to get suspicious or treat you differently. You want to have them explain things to you.
Do not sit there with a pen and pencil writing every little detail of your trip down
Of course you can take a few notes if it is something that another consumer would do, but you do not want to appear out of place taking notes on every tiny thing from the moment you get into the store until the moment that you leave. Seeing someone doing that might send up red flags to the workers.
Do not tell anybody
You may be tempted to tell people that you are a mystery shopper. You should not tell anyone at all. Even if the person is another customer, someone who works there might overhear you or someone might open their mouth and tell someone. One word from them could ruin the entire thing. Some people can even read mouths, so it is best if you just keep your mouth shut entirely.
A lot of people do mystery shopping, and this involves a lot of do’s and do not’s. The above points highlight some things you should avoid.
