Some people want to give their loved ones the ultimate shock with a surprise wedding. They may invite them with the pretense that it is a birthday or another type of gathering but instead they will witness nuptials. There are both pros and cons to making your special day a surprise.
Pros
It can be a lot of fun
A lot of people really enjoy surprising people. They may just love to see the looks on everyone’s faces when they see that it is a wedding. It could make for a memorable evening for everyone.
They do not want people to make a big fuss out of it
When people know that you are getting married they may make a big deal. Meddlesome relatives may try to insert their opinions, and it often becomes something different then what the couple actually envisioned. If people do not even know that you are planning it then they cannot try to interfere. You can do what you want and not have as much attention beforehand, which many couples prefer.
Cons
Some people may not come
There are many people who would not make the effort to come to a birthday party or another type of party that is less important than a wedding. For instance, perhaps you have an elderly relative that finds it very difficult to travel or a workaholic friend that takes very little time off of work. For a regular party they may not make the effort but for a wedding they would have. These people may send their regrets and then miss out on the special day because of it. You might have other people who miss it for insignificant reasons such as small scheduling conflicts that they would have worked around if they had known that it was a wedding.
You might not have others there to help you
Just as not having attention prior to the wedding can be a pro for some people as previously mentioned it can also be a con. They may like the attention a bride gets. They may have wanted a bridal shower. They may have wanted their family and friends to help them pick out things.
Certain things will be difficult to plan
It would be pretty hard to have a bridal party walk down the aisle at your surprise wedding in matching dresses. You also will not get the presents that you would have gotten if people knew it was your wedding.
A surprise wedding can be a lot of fun, but there are drawbacks. Consider the above advantages and disadvantages of such an affair when deciding whether it is right for you.
