: Pros and Cons of Buying a used Car
:
(428 Words)
Should you buy a used car? This is the question many ask themselves, and there is no one definitive answer. Making such a purchase has advantages and disadvantages, and it is each person’s preferences and financial abilities that dictate the right answer. The following are some pros and cons to consider.
Pros
It is cheaper
Of course, the more significant reason most cite for buying a used car is that they are less money. You will pay far less for a car that has been owned for a month compared to one that is brand new. Some cars depreciate more than others, but your savings can be significant. You can buy a used car for $500; of course you are unlikely to get a new car at this price. If you have very little money, then a used car may be your only option.
You can get a model no longer available
Perhaps you saw a car in the past that you really liked. As time passes, models change, often significantly. In this economy, entire car types lines are being discontinued. If you have your heart set on a particular car that is no longer available, then used may be your own choice.
Cons:
It may not last as long
Someone else will have used the car up for part of its life, thus you may not have a car that lasts as long as a new car. Of course this will entirely depend on the age and mileage of the car. If you get a used car that is six months old and has 5000 miles, then this might be insignificant. If you get a car that is five years old and has 60,000 miles on it, then it might have used up a significant portion of its life.
It might not look as nice
Used cars often look used. They may have dents or scratches. They may be of an older style and clearly show it.
They may not have as nice features
Some new features come out every year that were not available on older cars. These may be convenience features or safety features like a specific type of airbags. You may miss these on a used car.
They may not drive as well
Some cars will not drive as well as they age. Their parts may start to get old and they may just feel differently.
When deciding whether to buy a used car, consider the advantages and disadvantages to see what outweighs the other for you. The above factors are those to heed.
