Pros and Cons of Fake Wood Floors

(451 Words)
Fake wood floors provide both advantages and disadvantages to homeowners. It is a very popular type of floor, which can be purchased at flooring stores, hardware stores and even discount stores, such as Costco. Think about the benefits and disadvantages of this type of flooring before you buy.
The look of fake wood flooring can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. If you get a good type, it can very much replicate the look of real wood. Unfortunately, it cannot do so perfectly. For instance, the planks may have the exact same or very similar grain patterns, unlike real wood in which each piece is unique. If you truly want the look of real wood, then you will have to purchase it.
Cost is a definite advantage to fake wood flooring. Many people who could not afford real wood flooring can afford the fake wood. It may literally be a fraction of the price.
It is also easier and cheaper to install fake wood flooring. Some types even come with adhesive already on the bottom so that a person who is not a professional can stick them right on the floor. If you can do it yourself, you will obviously save a great deal of money on the installation.
Fake wood flooring is also typically much more durable than real wood flooring. For instance, if something sharp drops on it, it is less likely to get dented or scratched as compared to a real wood floor. Thus, it may be a good type of flooring for someone who has kids or pets.
It is generally very easy to clean fake wood floors. You can simply sweep up dirt and wipe up spills. They do not get stained very easily as compared to other types of flooring, such as carpeting. Also, whereas real wood will often fade, many types of fake wood flooring are fade resistant and will stay looking much the same.
One disadvantage of fake wood flooring is that it typically will not last as long as real wood. With real wood, you can refinish it to extend its life. With fake wood, your only choice may be to replace it. It is also more difficult to replace it if the same type by the same manufacturer is not available anymore. With real wood you may be able to find the same type of wood and pretty much get the same look, but this is not true with the fake wood flooring. If you switch a few tiles, it might be glaringly obvious.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to fake wood flooring. Think about all of these when deciding which type of flooring to get for your home.
