Qualifications Needed for Armed Security Jobs
An armed security job can be a great position. Different companies will ask that you possess different qualifications, yet certain requirements will be commonly seen. The following are some of these.
Ability to use a firearm
This is one of the most important qualifications. If you are to be armed, the company will want to make certain that you know how to use the weapon. In many cases you will be required to have formal schooling to be in an armed security job. They will teach you how to use the weapon. You also may need a permit.
Ability to know when to use the weapon
Arguably as important as knowing how to use your weapon is knowing when to use it. Armed security should use their weapons very little. Many people never end up using it at all. The threat may be the biggest part of it. As soon as you bring it out, it escalates the situation. At times, however, it may be necessary. You should be able to ascertain the difference.
Someone with confidence
It is absolutely vital that a security guard be confident. You want someone to feel like you are competent to take care of any problem. You do not want them to think that you will just get scared at the slightest thing. You can often tell confidence from body language. If you stand up tall and walk like you are sure of yourself then you might show this rather than if you are hunched over and have a weaker stance. They would not have hired you if they did not feel confident that you could do the job. You should feel confident as well.
Someone who can keep a good focus
It is vitally important for an armed security guard keep good watch. You want to notice if something is amiss or if someone is sneaking around. If you are assigned to watch over security cameras as many security guards are, then you should be able to do so. A lot of people will start to space out or may even fall asleep. You may lose your job if you are caught snoozing on the job, and someone could sneak up on you. You should be able to stay alert when on the job.
It is better if you can defuse situations rather than letting them escalate. Sometimes situations are beyond a security guard’s control. i.e. if a gunman comes in and just starts shooting. Other times however the same situation could turn into a quiet arrest or a shootout depending on the activities of an armed security guard. Obviously the best resolution is a peaceful one, and you should be skilled in dealing with people to try to achieve this.
There are many qualifications that an armed security guard should have. Consider the above points when deciding whether this job is right for you.
